What is Integrative Nutrition Anyway?

Joshua Rosenthal, the Founder of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, developed these techniques while working with his own clients over the course of his long career as a Health Coach. This can give you a handle on what's unique about the Integrative Nutrition approach.

7 Core Concepts from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition

1. A FOCUS ON PRIMARY FOOD.

Relationships, Physical Activity, Career, and Spirituality; we have an understanding that being healthy is not just about the food on your plate; it’s about the water you drink, the air you breathe, the love in your life, the amount you exercise, whether you have a fulfilling career and spiritual practice, and so on. Primary food and the food you eat (secondary food) should be looked at together rather than separately.

2. INTEGRATION OF ALL THE DIFFERENT DIETARY THEORIES.

I learn the pros and cons of each diet, from traditional to fad diets, so that I can be aware of all the theories and have options and a greater understanding for my clients and their needs.

3. BASED ON THE INDIVIDUAL, NOT ON A THEORY.

People are hypnotized by theories. Nutrition information is often taken from the media, newspapers, magazines, the Internet, or books, and when a specific diet doesn’t work for one person, it brings on a sense of failure. I teach that there is no one right diet that works for everyone. I encourage you to explore what works best for you and to trust your body. You can’t fail at a diet that you create for your unique self.

4. CROWDING OUT.

By adding healthier foods into your diet, you will gently crowd out the ones that no longer serve you. More fruits, vegetables, and water will naturally lead to less caffeine, sugar, and processed food.

5. GIVEN HALF A CHANCE, THE BODY WILL HEAL ITSELF BY ITSELF.

We are a society who wants a pill for every ill. By slowing down and allowing yourself the rest you need, your body has the opportunity to heal on a deeper level.

6. DECONSTRUCTING CRAVINGS.

The body doesn’t make mistakes – it is a super biocomputer. Your body maintains a healthy temperature, your heart never misses a beat, and your lungs never forget to breathe. If you are craving something, listen to your body and find healthy ways to satisfy the craving.

7. THE SAME DIET AND LIFESTYLE RECOMMENDATIONS WILL HELP EVERYONE GET WELL, NO MATTER THE DISEASE:

• Less meat, milk, sugar, and “chemicalized” artificial junk food

• Less coffee and alcohol

• More fruits, vegetables, and whole foods

• Appropriate protein

• Enough drinking water

• Adequate rest
